St Andrews Bay, South Georgia Island

In St Andrews Bay more than 150,000 nesting pairs of King Penguins live (and breed, and shit). Plus a few gentoo penguins, fur seals, elephant seals and sea birds, of course.

It was a curiously monochrome vista punctuated by the orange on the king and gentoo penguins, the seaweed and the red flags out team put out. And our blue parkas.

No, it is not a log, it’s an elephant seal! And you can never have too many photos of king penguins.

Some penguins are still moulting

There were quite a lot of dead seals in various states of decomposition. That this is due to bird flu is likely. We were all sad to learn the flu has been discovered at Heard Island earlier this week too.

There were a few small clumps of seaweed that the Expedition Team would have been counting for the citizen science project the South Georgia Big Seaweed Search.

Playful seals, most of the time.

I rarely take selfies but heck, if there was ever a time to take one…

No, I have no idea how I managed to capture this bizarre image either.
